As 2020 comes to a close it will be remembered as being one of the most difficult years in recent memory for the global community. Psychedelics are giving us a different perspective by giving us quite a few wins for the year. This year may also be remembered in the history books as the year that the world woke up to the psychedelic revolution, and all that it has to offer. These advancements give us hope for the future and recovering from the trauma that will be known as 2020
Here are our top seven moments in Psychedelics for 2020:
7. Psilocybin-Assisted Group Therapy Shown Effective for Treating Chronic Depression
Now a recent study suggests that psychedelic-assisted group therapy using psilocybin, the psychoactive ingredient in magic mushrooms, offers a cost effective alternative for delivering psychotherapy, pre- and post-psilocybin, to patients. Research into the healing potential of psychedelic-assisted therapies have largely focused on the treatment of a single client by a single therapist. Read more here.
6. DC Decriminalized All Entheogenic Plants
In a landslide victory D.C. Voters approved ballot initiative 81 to decriminalize the use of magic mushrooms and entheogenic plants after a long campaign in which supporters collected signatures during the summer of the coronavirus pandemic. Read more here.
5. Oregon became the first state in the nation to legalize psilocybin in therapeutic settings!
Measure 109 passed with 56% of the vote, as more than a million Oregonians said yes to the measure.The treatmentisn’t only for Oregonians struggling with mental health problems. Anyone age 21 or older who passes a screening will be able to access the services for “personal development.” Read more here.
4. MDMA phase 3 trials were statistically significant. Making MAPS the first the successful psychedelic FDA Trial in the USA.

“It’s now with an enormous sense of pride, satisfaction, and relief that I can share that we learned that MAPP1 was statistically significant, and is therefore considered a successful Phase 3 study. MAPS is on track towards our goal of obtaining FDA approval if we can successfully complete our second Phase 3 study and other associated safety studies that the FDA has required.” Read more here.
3. Oregon passed Measure 110, which decriminalized the personal, noncommercial use of all drugs, such as cocaine, meth, heroin and all psychedelics.
The ballot will simultaneously fund a desperately needed network of treatment, recovery and harm reduction services using millions of dollars in tax revenue from legal cannabis sales, as well as funds that would have otherwise been spent on policing and incarceration. Read more here.
2. Psychedelic drug DMT to undergo first clinical trial to treat depression in the UK
The drug is known as the ‘spirit molecule’ has been approved in the first study of its kind, UK regulators have given the drug dimethyltriptamine (DMT) the green light for a clinical trial into its effectiveness in treating patients with depression. Read more here.

Over 9 separate drug related ballot initiatives passed in 2020! All drug initiatives that were brought to vote in 2020 won! Everything from medical cannabis to full decriminalization of all drugs passed this year. There is still much work to do to clean up the mess made by this social war including reversing the damage on BIPOC communities. Read more here.
